Hunan Research Institute of Chemical Industry

Established in 1951, the Hunan Research Institute of Chemical Industry stands as a pioneering research institution in China. It's not only a shining example of the country's national research system reform but also holds a pivotal role in the formation of a technology-based joint-stock enterprise, Hunan Haili Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., initiated in 1994. In 2014, the institute underwent restructuring and became known as the "Hunan Chemical Research Institute Co., Ltd." operating as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hunan Haili.

The institute is a major center for the development and research of agrochemicals in China. It boasts five national-level research platforms, including the National Agrochemical Development Engineering Technology Research Center, the National Carbamate Agrochemical Industrial Experimental Base, the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Bionic Pesticides, the National South Agrochemical Development Center (Hunan Base), and the National Enterprise Technology Center. Moreover, it hosts two provincial-level key laboratories and five provincial-level research centers. The institute holds authorization from the Ministry of Agriculture for pesticide registration testing, covering indoor efficacy testing, field efficacy testing, residue testing, environmental behavior testing, environmental toxicology testing, and full component analysis. It is also authorized by the Hunan Provincial Fertilizer and Pesticide Quality Supervision and Inspection Authorization Station and the Hunan Chemical Product Quality Supervision Station.

The institute boasts a strong research and development force and has established a comprehensive research and development system, encompassing chemical synthesis, bioactivity screening, process optimization, engineering technology development and design, residue and full component analysis, application technology research, waste treatment, and information consulting. Notably, the institute has successfully developed a complete set of clean production technologies for a series of efficient carbamate agrochemicals and their key intermediates, positioning China's carbamate agrochemical manufacturing technology at an advanced global level.

The institute's scientific research team is formidable, and it operates a post-doctoral work station. It comprises 132 researchers, including 13 with doctoral degrees, 4 recipients of special allowances from the State Council, and 65% with senior professional titles. In collaboration with esteemed universities like Central South University and Hunan Normal University, the institute has established five joint master's programs and four joint doctoral programs. It has undertaken a total of 228 national, provincial, and municipal research projects (including 102 at the national level) and has received over 90 national and provincial-level scientific and technological achievement awards.
